Duvoid (Bethanechol) is used to treat problems with urination due to nerve problems in the bladder or weakness in certain bladder muscles. It works by stimulating the bladder muscles that are responsible for causing urination. Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride is also used by people who have trouble urinating after surgery or after delivering a baby.
Your doctor may have suggested Duvoid (Bethanechol) for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of Duvoid (Bethanechol) may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking Duvoid (Bethanechol), speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Duvoid (Bethanechol) without consulting your doctor.
Do not give Duvoid (Bethanechol) to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take Duvoid (Bethanechol) if their doctor has not prescribed it.
The usual adult starting dose is 5 mg taken three or four times daily, at least 6 hours apart. The medication begins to work within 60 to 90 minutes and its effects last for up to 6 hours. Depending on side effects and your response to the medication, your doctor will gradually increase the dose of the medication until an appropriate response is reached.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones given here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
Duvoid (Bethanechol) is best taken on an empty stomach to avoid nausea and vomiting. Taking Duvoid (Bethanechol) at least 1 hour before eating or 2 hours after eating helps to minimize upset stomach.
It is important to take Duvoid (Bethanechol) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store Duvoid (Bethanechol) at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes Duvoid (Bethanechol). If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of Duvoid (Bethanechol) with your doctor.
The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking Duvoid (Bethanechol). Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.
Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects.
Although most of these side effects listed below don't happen very often, they could lead to serious problems if you do not check with your doctor or seek medical attention.

Since caffeine, alcohol, the Nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.
Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or Allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. Asthma: Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride could worsen asthma symptoms in some people. Epilepsy: Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride may increase the risk of seizures for people with epilepsy. People with epilepsy or a history of seizure disorder should discuss with their doctor how Duvoid (Bethanechol) may affect their medical condition, how their medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Duvoid (Bethanechol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Heart disease: Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride could worsen the symptoms of certain types of heart disease. People with heart disease should discuss with their doctor how Duvoid (Bethanechol) may affect their medical condition, how their medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Duvoid (Bethanechol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Low Blood Pressure: For people with low blood pressure, Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride could cause a further reduction in blood pressure thereby resulting in a worsening of symptoms. People with low blood pressure or those who are taking medication to reduce blood pressure, should discuss with their doctor how Duvoid (Bethanechol) may affect their medical condition, how their medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Duvoid (Bethanechol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Overactive thyroid: Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride could increase the risk of heart problems associated with overactive thyroid. People with an overactive thyroid gland should discuss with their doctor how Duvoid (Bethanechol) may affect their medical condition, how their medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Duvoid (Bethanechol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Parkinson's disease: Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride could worsen the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. People with Parkinson's disease should discuss with their doctor how Duvoid (Bethanechol) may affect their medical condition, how their medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Duvoid (Bethanechol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Stomach problems: Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride could worsen stomach ulcers or other stomach problems. People with stomach ulcers or a history of stomach problems should discuss with their doctor how Duvoid (Bethanechol) may affect their medical condition, how their medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Duvoid (Bethanechol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Pregnancy: Duvoid (Bethanechol) should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking Duvoid (Bethanechol), contact your doctor immediately.
Breast-feeding: It is not known if Duvoid (Bethanechol) chloride passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking Duvoid (Bethanechol), it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
Children: The safety and effectiveness of using Duvoid (Bethanechol) have not been established for children.
